It is midnight in Dhaka. A small retailer pulls down the shutter on his shop after a fourteen-hour day. But he cannot rest yet. In just a few hours, he will have to sacrifice his sleep to drag himself to a paikari market like Karwan Bazar or Jatrabari. He must haggle for the right price, inspect the quality, and arrange transport himself.
Why? Because no formal supply chain delivers to the small kacha bazars and independent shopkeepers. The few informal delivery services that exist only cater to the big wet markets or large buyers. For the small-scale business owner with limited capital, the current system offers no leverage, only exhaustion.
To make matters worse, the chain is controlled by layers of middlemen, dalals, and syndicates. They dictate the price on both ends, squeezing the farmer who grows it, and inflating the cost for the retailer who is already losing sleep just to keep his shop stocked.
This isn't a farming problem. It's a supply chain problem. And it's been waiting a long time for someone to solve it properly.
